  • Forest school fun!

    Published 24/06/22

Year 1 have had a lovely week, with the highlight being their Forest School Day on Wednesday. The children thoroughly enjoyed making beautiful crowns and sceptres, using things they found in our outdoor areas and we hope you enjoyed seeing what they made. They also had fun building homes for bugs in the afternoon, with some very elaborate creations and luxury homes for our bugs!

In history and English this week we looked at what happened during the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The children explored, through drama and writing, what it might have been like to be a soldier in the battle and also made a story map to sequence the events. The children are so excited to find out what happens next and who eventually becomes King, which we shall reveal next week!

In maths, we have been looking at money with a focus on coin recognition and the value of each coin. We will be continuing to look at money and making different amounts next week so any extra practice by looking at coins and paying for things this weekend will be a help.

  • Pond dipping and Orienteering!

    Published 17/06/22

Year 1 have had another brilliant week and coped very well in the heat! We have been orienteering in PE and enjoyed using a map of the field to find markers. We were able to use the positional and directional language that we learnt about in maths to help direct us to different points.

In history, we have begun learning about the Middle Ages and discussing what life was like in the past. We then learnt about the four contenders for who should be the next King of England after Edward the Confessor. We had lots of fun learning about and acting out Harold Godwinson, William Duke of Normandy, Edgar the Atheling and fierce Harald Hadrada! In English, we wrote persuasively about who we thought should be the next King and why.

In science, we have continued our topic of animals and discussed habitats. We went to the pond and managed to find lots of pond snails, pons skaters, dragonflies and even a newt! In computing we learnt to use paint and drew our a lovely self-portrait using different shapes and tools.

  • New topics and an archaeological dig!

    Published 10/06/22

We have welcomed the children back to their last half term in Year 1! We have had a really exciting week. We have started lots of new topics. We will be focusing on English and history together this term and Year 1 had an exciting archaeological dig to find artefacts from the past. They have been guessing what these artefacts represent and what our next topic might be! All will be revealed next week. In maths, we have been learning about tally charts and graphs. The children have investigated the favourite animals in the class and built their own tally charts and graphs. It has genuinely been amazing to see how many animals have been represented and which ones were the favourites. In R.E. we have begun looking at the religion of Islam and thought about what more we would like to know about this religion. In art we have painted our diva lamps and practised our sketching skills. We have also done lots of reading and phonics this week, the children have amazed and delighted us! Go Year 1!
