  • People who help us

    Published 08/10/25

We have had another exciting couple of weeks in Reception! Inspired by our topic book, A Superhero Like You, the children have been thinking and drawing about what superhero they would like to be when they grow up. They have shared their fantastic ideas, including becoming doctors, waste collectors, postman and scientists. Our topic, ‘People Who Help Us’, has given the children the chance to learn all about the important jobs people do to help others. As part of this, they have been busy writing letters and posting them in our class post box, ready for the postman to sort and deliver.

  • Friends and Phonics

    Published 23/09/25

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks in Reception! We have been learning our first phonic sounds with a new sound every day. For our topic 'All About Me' we have been drawing pictures of ourselves and our families. The children used their beautiful collages (made at home) to talk to their class all about themselves and their families. We have been so impressed with how confidently the children have been speaking in front of their new classes.

The children loved working in groups to complete funky finger activities. These activities help them to develop their fine motor skills and include; threading cheerios, threading beads on pipe cleaners, making paper clip chains and joining paper friendship chains. We have also been making 'friendship' recipes. The children were able to think of lovely ideas about what makes a good friend. They have been enjoying our outside space during playtimes and have been busy making new friends.

  • Matisse's Magical Trail

    Published 03/07/25

We have had a fantastic time in Reception continuing our Life in the Undergrowth topic. This week, we looked closely at snails. We started by reading a lovely book called Matisse’s Magical Trail. The story helped us learn more about the famous artist Henri Matisse and one of his most well-known artworks, The Snail. Following this, the children created their own beautiful snail collages using brightly coloured paper, just like Matisse did. We then went on to make our very own clay snails, carefully moulding, shaping and painting their spiral shells. It’s been a wonderful week of learning through art, storytelling, and hands-on creativity. Well done Reception—you really followed the magical trail with enthusiasm!

  • Butterflies and Bees

    Published 17/06/25

We have had a wonderful few weeks in Reception learning about butterflies and bees. We started with an all-time favourite book called 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. The children then learnt about the life-cycle of a butterfly and made play dough bugs. We then read 'Little Bee' and made a giant bee hive from drawing around hexagons. After that, we made bees to decorate it with. In maths, we learnt about symmetry and the children coloured some beautiful symmetrical butterflies. We have been so impressed with the children's writing about bees. They were able to recall information, leave finger spaces and even add adjectives. Well done for all your hard work Reception!

  • Did you know a bee has smelly feet?

    Published 05/06/25

Reception have started their final half-term like busy, buzzy bees! We enjoyed the bee assembly and learnt so many different facts. Did you know a bee has smelly feet? Did you know bumblebees are important in helping to grow food like tomatoes? This was a great way to launch our new topic of 'Life in the undergrowth', where we will be looking at different invertebrates. We learnt that an invertebrate was an animal without a backbone. We were also amazed to learn that plants, trees and flowers were living things too! We read the book 'A nature trail' by Benjamin Zepinhiah and visiting our forest area. It was great fun! Next week we will focus on butterflies. We also loved linking our shape work in maths to create tangrams of different creatures.
