Kew Gardens

Year 6 had a lovely long walk and a great time visiting Kew Gardens last Wednesday.
Our trip reinforced our science learning about evolution and adaptation. During the course of the day we learnt even more about plant evolution. First came the algae, then the moss, next were the ferns followed by conifers and finally flowering plants – a process of development that took over 500 million years. We also went on a tree-spotting walk and by the end of the morning, we were able to tell the difference between an oak, a plane tree and a cedar tree. All of the children also really enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with our friends in the beautiful surroundings of the Royal Botanic Gardens. On Monday we had even more fun with our science back at school when we learnt about the kingdoms of life in the Science Dome. We learnt some amazing facts - did you know that a protist is only 0.0008mm in length?
This week in Year 6 the children have really enjoyed their science lessons where they have designed a chart to classify some of the invertebrates we might be able to find in and around our school. We are all looking forward to presenting our charts to our friends in the Reception classes so they can learn about what we know! In history, we have been learning about the role played by women and people from the Commonwealth in the fight against the Axis powers during World War II. We have also been learning about how the common themes and beliefs of different religions which show how interlinked they are with each other. We have also enjoyed our PE throughout the half term where we have developed and improved our tag rugby skills.
