Year 1 have had a lovely two weeks!
Last week we had a special workshop led by Accent catering all about the 'Eatwell guide' and we enjoyed sorting food into their food groups.
In English we have been learning about traditional tales. We have read the story of the Hare and the Tortoise and also learnt about the prefix 'un' and the suffix 'er'. We then wrote sentences to compare the hare and the tortoise.
In maths we have been exploring multiplication and grouping counters into equal groups. We then learnt how to draw arrays to match multiplication sentences and have been practising countins in 2s, 5s and 10s.
In geography we have continued learning about the weather and had a lot of fun being weather forecasters, using weather symbols to predict the weather for different parts of the UK.
In science we have been making the most of our school grounds and went to look at the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.
This week we also started a little bit of French! We learnt 'bonjour and salut' and have enjoyed greeting each other in French.
We are also very much looking forward to our school trip to Hobbledown tomorrow!
In maths, Year 1 have had lots of fun measuring the capacity and volume of different containers. This has been a very practical topic and we have enjoyed going outside and exploring and comparing the different amount of liquid that containers can hold. In English, we have been exploring traditional tales. Recently, we have been reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears to help us understand the features of a traditional tale. We also did a conscience alley to come to the decision if Goldilocks is good or bad. In computing, we have continued our topic on programming bee-bots. This week we have been creating routes for our bee-bots to travel along. In geography, we have been learning about weather. We have explored what type of weather we see in the four seasons.
Year 1 have had a very busy two weeks! A highlight was designing and then making our own fruit salads in class. We carefully chopped our chosen ingredients and were all very happy with the final taste test!
In English we have been writing animal fact books. We compared fiction and non-fiction books first, then wrote about our chosen animal's appearance, animal group and diet. We then went to share these with Reception.
In maths we explored length and height. We began by measuring with cubes then used rulers to measure objects as well as lines.
In geography, we have been looking at our local area. We thought about our home, town, borough, city, country AND continent! We are very much looking forward to our local walk at the end of the week too.
In science we have continued our topic of animals and this week we have been making the most of our school grounds and went pond dipping. So far Hedgehogs and Otters have been successful finding a range of animals including newts. Moles are looking forward to their turn tomorrow.
We also enjoyed singing to you all this afternoon! Have a lovely Easter break.
Welcome back Year 1!
This week we have started our poetry topic in English. So far we have explored and performed nursery rhymes and rhyming poems. We have learnt how to perform poetry in an exciting way through using actions, sound effects and changing the tone of our voice. In Maths, we are recapping our knowledge of subtraction, and we have been looking for the missing number using part whole models, number lines, and pictures. In music, we are creating our own aquarium- sounding music. We have used a range of instruments including, a glockenspiel, tambourine, drum and maraca. In geography, we are learning about rural and urban areas. We will be exploring the different features we can find in a rural and urban environment. In science, we are continuing to learn about animals. This week we have learnt about carnivore, omnivore and herbivore diets.

This term, we have started a range of exciting new topics across the curriculum. In English, we have begun whole-class lessons, and our new text is Where the Wild Things Are. We started by exploring the story through role-play and freeze frames to help us become familiar with the characters and events. In maths, we have started a topic on place value to 20. This week, we have focused on numbers 11–19, learning about tens and ones and why they are important. In history, we are learning about the history of flight. We are exploring some of the earliest flying machines and inventions, and we also designed our own flying machines. In science, we went on a winter walk where we looked for signs of winter and discussed the seasonal changes we will be experiencing over the next couple of months.
Year 1 have had a great two weeks!
In English we created our own monster. We then used adjectives to describe our monsters. We have now also learnt about verbs and have been writing about our morning routines.
In maths we have been continuing to add and subtract numbers using tens frames, number lines and resources to help us. We also leant about fact families using part whole models.
We have begun our new history topic all about explorers! We thought about what an explorer is and what they do, we then drew ourselves as explorers. We have learnt about a significant explorer called Ibn Battuta and how he travelled for nearly 30 years!
In science we have been enjoying exploring a range of materials and describing their properties. This week we tested which materials were transparent and which were opaque.
In art we have been working together to create a piece of artwork using different types of lines using oil pastels, pencils and pens.
We have started reading a new story this term - The Gruffalo! We are learning about adjectives and we have been describing the Gruffalo. In maths, we are learning about subtraction. We have been subtracting by using counters and crossing out pictures. In science, we have explored the sense of sight. We used our observation skills to watch what happened to the skittles when we added water to them. Moles and Otters have started Forest School and are enjoying all of the outdoor activities. Hedgehogs are looking forward to starting their sessions soon.
