Sparks, Stories, & Sums

What a fantastic end to Autumn Term 1 and wonderful start to Autumn 2!

In English, we have officially wrapped up our unit on Stuck by Oliver Jeffers! To celebrate the spooky season, the children created their own brilliant Halloween-themed versions of the story—getting everything from flying broomsticks to spooky skeletons stuck in trees.

What's Next?: We are excited to dive straight into another Oliver Jeffers classic, Lost and Found, as we explore themes of friendship and journeying to new places. The children have already showcased their great acting and story mapping skills as they have retold this story to the class. Look out for our lost posters over the next week!

At the end of last term, we had a lovely music day inspired by the story of The Great Fire of London. The children explored how to create different sounds using a range of instruments and everyday objects. They investigated musical texture, experimenting with layering sounds to build thick and thin textures that represented roaring flames, crackling wood, and bustling streets.

In Maths, we have been diving deep into number bonds and addition strategies. We reinforced our instant recall of number bonds to 10. Using our known number bonds, we progressed to adding two single-digit numbers together, and even challenged ourselves to add three single-digit numbers in one calculation! This week, we took our learning further by using single and two-digit numbers to add up to the nearest 10.

We rounded off our History unit on The Great Fire of London with a fun end-of-unit quiz to test our knowledge—the children blew us away with how much detail they remembered!

This half term, we switch our focus to Geography, where we will explore our local area and learn all about where we live.

We continued our exploration of materials this week, focusing on sustainability. The children thought carefully about where materials come from, how they can be reused, and why recycling is so important for looking after our environment.

In R.E., we built on our ongoing conversations about gratitude and expressing thanks. We looked closely at Hinduism to learn how Hindus show gratitude and devotion during Puja, exploring the different rituals, symbols, and objects used in prayer.

Thank you for your continued support at home!
