Harvest, Art and Story Writing
This week we have been very busy and have started lots of new exciting topics. In maths, we have started addition and subtraction. We began by recapping our number bonds to 10. The children worked as a team to match all the different themed numbers to make each set add up to 10. In English, we have started a new book - Stuck. We have been learning about Pie Corbett and putting actions to some of the words while reading. Soon we will use drama to act out and tell the whole story. Maybe they can show you at home. Finally, in computing, we have been learning how to touch type using BBC Dance Mat.
This week in English we have started a new book - Invisible Fred! We are learning about questions and what some common question words are. We will soon write some questions for Fred. In Maths, we are continuing our place value topic. We have been counting in tens to 100. We have focused on number lines and making sure they go up at the correct intervals. We have strengthened our estimating skills by putting numbers on a blank number line. We even made our own massive number line! In science, we are busy conducting experiments and are beginning to understand what a prediction is and are trying to make some predictions in different experiments.
Year 2 have settled amazingly well into school life and the new year group. This week we have begun our new text in literacy "The day the crayons quit" and we have been writing a character description for one of the crayons. In maths we have been revising partitioning and breaking up numbers up to 100 into tens and ones. In history we have begun learning about the Fire of London and looked at the sequence of events that happened over 5 days. In Art we have begin a new module which is a multi media one combining the skills of painting and collage. Finally we have been getting to know our new class room and class teacher. It has been busy but also lots of fun!
Year 2 have had a busy two weeks!
In English we finished writing about the pros and cons of zoos and continued our ongoing debate about whether zoos are for animals or humans. We also read a new book by Anthony Browne called Gorilla. We made some inferences about how the character was feeling at different points in the story and why.
In history, we went back in time to learn about and experience what a lesson was like in the Victorian times! We learnt about the 3Rs; reading, writing and arithmetic. Additionally, we learnt about how children had to sit in rows, use a blackboard and chalk and of course the strict punishments!
In science we have continued exploring different habitats and discussing why animals are suited to their habitat. We discussed extreme habitats such as the arctic and desert as well as local habitats such as under the ground.
In maths we finished our work on telling the time and have now been recapping the four operations. We are also moving on to a variety of reasoning problems and learning how to solve these.
In PE, we have been doing some artistic gymnastics! We have been balancing bean bags, balls and using hoops to travel in a variety of different ways.
