It is great to see the children back in school looking rested and ready for their final term in Year 5. In English, we will be reading and basing our writing on our core text, Journey to Jo’burg which will provide the children with an insight into the apartheid era of South Africa. After half term, our poetry text, The Lost Words by Robert MacFarlane, will introduce the children to examples of vocabulary which are disappearing from everyday use. We will write poems which are structured in a range of different ways such as etherees and kennings. In maths, the children will be developing their understanding of decimals and percentages, measurement, geometry and statistics. Science lessons will focus on studying living things and their habitats and examinations of the different types of reproduction in plants animals. In May, we will be showing off our singing prowess at the Young Voices Concert and we are all looking forward to our residential trip to the Isle of Wight. In preparation for this, we will study how the geography of the island has influenced its history and economic development and examine features of coastal erosion. One of our three weekly PE sessions in the first half term will introduce us to lacrosse, we will design, make and evaluate our own pulley system in DT and in art we will have the opportunity to improve our watercolour skills as the sun shines! It is going to be a busy but enjoyable term for everyone. Keep checking the website and our tweets for updates about our learning.
