  • Exploring our sense of smell!

    Published 08/10/25

Another great week in Year 1!

This week in carousel we have been exploring our sense of smell to continue our science topic about parts of the body. We enjoyed a walk to the sensory garden to explore the scents of different herbs. We have also been learning about Australian aboriginal dot painting, and have had a go making our own dot painting of a snake!

In maths, we have begun learning about part-whole models. We have explored the part-whole model using a variety of resources and then practised combining parts to make a whole.

In geography, we have continued learning about the continents. This week's focus was Australasia, and we learnt and wrote lots of facts about Australia and put them together to make a class fact file!

In PSHE, we have been learning about safety. This week, we explored safety around substances and discussed things that are safe/ not safe for our bodies.

    Have a lovely weekend!

    Published 19/06/25

Year 1 have had a great two weeks!

Last week in history we went for an archaeological dig around the school grounds and found some interesting artefacts. We have also been learning about Edward the Confessor and made our own decisions about who we think would make a good King of England after him.

In English we have enjoyed learning about superheroes linked to Supertato. After describing Supertato we have then created our own fruit or vegetable superhero! Children have been very creative and we have had all sorts of wonderful creations from Magnificent Mango to Powerful Pickle!

In maths we have continued learning about position and direction and how to describe where objects are using left, right, above and below. We also explored quarter, half and full turns using clockwise and anticlockwise. This has also linked into our PE where we have been orienteering using a map of the school.

In computing we have been using the BeeBots and had a lot of fun programming them to get to different places.

What a super start back to the final term in year 1! We hope you had a great half term.

  • Future meteorologists!

    Published 15/05/25

Over the past couple of weeks we have become expert weather forecasters in our geography lessons and we are delighted to inform you that the sun is here to stay for a while! This week we also looked at how meteorologists use special equipment to forecast the weather.

In science, for our topic on plants, we have been looking at the trees in our playground and carefully observing the leaves to decide whether they are deciduous or evergreen. We also combined our maths skills to measure the leaves using cubes (please see pic above!).

In art, we used our paper sculpture skills to create a ‘Tree of life’ (It appears to have been a very tree themed kind of week!)

In our English lessons, we have continued our topic on traditional tales with a focus on the ‘Hare and the Tortoise’.  With this, we have looked at the prefix ‘un’ and the suffix ‘er’ and included these in our sentence writing.

Finally, in maths, after a unit on multiplication, we have started division and have practised sharing objects in equal groups. We then moved on to representing the objects by drawing counters and groups.

We are also looking forward to our trip to Hobbledown on Friday to support our science learning (animals). Only one more sleep to go! Have a super weekend.
