Dear parents and carers
I hope you are well. There are numerous events happening in school and the wider community to get us through a dark and wet January. Among these, you will see details of the wonderful Year 5 trip to sing at the Young Voices at the 02 on Monday night; many thanks to all the staff who took the children.

Ambassadors – History
A comment from Mrs D’Urso and Miss Lister:
The history ambassadors are all very enthusiastic about meeting the responsibilities of their roles. We’re very excited that we have been chosen to take part in the initial judging process for the Historical Association’s Young Quills book awards this year; the books have arrived, and the ambassadors are keen to start reading them and writing their reviews.
Comments from the history ambassadors:
I like finding out about what time would have been like in the past - how you would have lived and how it was different to now. At the moment, I am learning about local history and have found some interesting pictures of the local area including two of Sheen Mount when there was a private house here - James O’C
I’m especially interested in World War I and World War II and I’ve looked at lots of photographs of the UK during the war. I also like the Tudors and King Henry VIII - Alex S
The periods I particularly like are World War II and the Roman period. I am interested in the battle strategies of the Romans and how they developed and kept such a big empire as well as how the empire fell - Daniel MF.
School events
O2 Young Voices
On Monday 19th January, Year 5 travelled to the O2 Arena to take part in Young Voices 2026. They proudly performed as part of an almost 9,000-strong choir, singing alongside children from other schools and supported by inspiring guest performers.
"My favourite part of Young Voices was Urban Strides. I loved their moves because they were so in sync. I would describe them as energetic, uplifting and mesmerising!"
Mia M, 5F
"The O2 was an extraordinary experience. It was magical dancing and singing with all the children and Urban Strides. I loved listening to the singers and being a part of the Young Voices choir as it was lively and interactive."
Bea, 5H
"The O2 was a life-changing experience that showed me what is possible when you try. It was amazing how well everyone sang, even though we hadn't rehearsed with the other schools before. We loved the songs - it was really incredible!"
Leo, 5W
Sports
Netball
The netball team continued their excellent league form with a convincing 20-2 victory at school last week.
Table Tennis
In our newest competitive sport, four boys went off to the U11 London finals yesterday in Ilford – which we are reliably informed is the most competitive regional event in the country. Many thanks for the parental support with taking the children and the transport, without which they would have been unable to compete.
The team finished second in their group, won their quarter-final and then had a narrow loss in the semi-final. They finished joint 3rd overall with some well-deserved medals.
Science Conference – Mrs Adams
During the first week of term, Mrs Adams attended the Association for Science Education National Conference at The University of Nottingham. Over the course of 3 days, she attended numerous CPD sessions on all aspects of primary science education, which she will be able to use in her AfC advisory role to feed into
improving the science curricula at schools across Richmond and Kingston, as well as here at Sheen Mount. She also gave a presentation at the conference, as part of a primary discussion panel on the theme of 'Leading science and navigating the challenges.'
Accent Catering – school council, continents, food tasting.
The school council met the main chef, Gintare, and her manager, Besnik, just before Christmas to offer their personal and classmates feedback. This is following up with some food tasting next week for menu items for the future.
On the last Thursday of every half-term a special menu is put together. In the past, we have looked at specific countries and their dishes. We are now moving onto continents.
There is a new menu currently and the children have been doing well trying and eating the new food. However, I have had feedback that the salmon fishcakes did not look particularly appetising last week and were very small in terms of portion size – I believe the fish will return in place of them.
Parenting resources
A charity that we work alongside us for funding and supporting local schools in their training of staff, have produced this useful directory of local services connected to parenting. It is easy to navigate and a handy reference point.

Indoor cycling community event
Many thanks to all the parents and children who attended this event on Saturday afternoon – with over 100 attendees. Thank you to all those who organised the event and gave up their time to do so.
It may well have inspired a children's cycle club – more news to follow in the future!
Bingo event after school
We look forward to this PSA event next Friday 30th January – tickets are available from classlist. I have been limbering up for my announcing duties by learning the phrases for each number!
