What's been happening in Year 1
Published 21/05/21This week has been another busy, fun week of learning in Year 1. We have been learning about another fable - the Hare and the Tortoise. We have : acted this out, sequenced the story, made a pictorial story map and written a diary entry as the tortoise. In art, we have been learning about printing and practising, using vegetables, making our very own prints. Can you guess which vegetables we used? We looked at the different shapes the vegetables could make and thought about which ones we would use to make an animal skin print next week . In maths, we have learnt about word problems and using "RUCSAC" to help us work out these out. We are very proud of the fact that we acted as "maths detectives" to find the language in the word problem. In Science, we have learnt about mammals and their key features. We learnt that mammals are warm- blooded and give birth to live baby animals. Did you know that a whale and a dolphin are mammals?

Learning and Happiness
Published 07/05/21What a busy four days Year 1 have had this week!
We have continued our work on Traditional Tales, with a focus on the story of The Three Little Pigs. The children enjoyed some acting, as well as sequencing the events of the story and writing their own version too. We have been so impressed by how hard the children are working on writing sentences that use the correct punctuation and lots of adjectives to describe the wolf, pigs and houses.
In maths, we have moved on to looking at subtraction. When looking at number bonds there is often a focus on using them for adding number sentences, however we looked at how to use our number bond knowledge to also write some subtraction number sentences. The children are also now experts at using number lines and hundred squares to help them solve problems.
In science, we have looked at the classification system for animals and discussed how they can be grouped. Focusing on birds and fish, the children came up with differences and similarities between the two groups which led to great discussions in the classes.
To end the week, the children spoke about our living value of happiness and drew what makes them happy. A lovely end to the week! - Read More

We have been learning to describe personality and appearance and to make our writing interesting through using adjectives and drawing on our knowledge of the story. In Maths, we have been focusing on recalling our number bonds to 10 and 20 and working out addition number sentences to 20 and beyond. In Science, we read the story of 'Night Monkey, Day Monkey' and learnt about diurnal and nocturnal animals. In Art, we have been practising our colour mixing skills and re-capping our knowledge of primary and secondary colours. In R.E. we have begun learning about the religion of Hinduism.
