The children have fully embraced all things Shakespeare as they conclude their work on Macbeth. They enjoyed a lively workshop exploring A Midsummer Night’s Dream and have been busy polishing their own performance of Macbeth, which we look forward to sharing after the Easter break. In maths, they have completed their geometry unit and begun interpreting line graphs and tables in statistics. In geography, they have reflected thoughtfully on fair trade and their own habits, while in science they had great fun investigating the unusual, non-linear properties of Oobleck. The children have worked incredibly hard this term, and we look forward to welcoming them back after a well-earned break, refreshed and ready for the summer term.

As we pass the halfway point of the school year, the children have continued to enjoy a busy and exciting couple of weeks in school! As part of Science Week, they have revisited their learning about the solar system and Earth’s relationship with the moon, while linking it to their work on the properties of materials. The classroom has been full of curiosity, with pupils asking thoughtful questions and exploring ideas like real scientists. In maths, pupils have completed their unit on decimals and begun exploring perimeter and area in geometry. In computing, they have loved coding BBC micro:bits to create their own digital name badges. Meanwhile, in English they have stepped into the role of detectives, investigating the mysterious murder of Banquo in Macbeth, and in DT they have begun bringing their own Macbeth puppets to life.

In maths, we have been exploring decimal fractions, building confidence with place value and reasoning. The children have been asking: is this material an electrical conductor or insulator? Using their practical enquiry skills, they have drawn thoughtful conclusions to support their findings. In DT, we have been investigating puppets and will use our new-found knowledge to design and make Macbeth-inspired puppets, linking to our work in English. We have also been busy exploring global brands as part of a unit of work on global trade in geography.

In maths, pupils have been confidently manipulating fractions and will soon move on to decimal calculations. In science, we have been separating materials, while creativity has been at the fore in art as pupils have experimented with a range of media to create self-portraits. In history, we have travelled the oceans through Viking sagas and trade — and we’re looking forward to next week’s Viking enrichment morning where we'll be getting a taste of Viking life, supported by Accent Catering!

They were fantastic ambassadors for our school.

Back in the classroom, in maths, they have continued to build confidence using formal methods of multiplication and division, linking them to their conceptual understanding. In science, they have been asking some big questions and investigating solutions and changes that occur over time – separating salt from saltwater using evaporation. Creativity has been the name of the game in English and art, with pupils crafting some truly vile character and setting descriptions as part of their work on Macbeth, as well as producing some fantastic poem art portraits.

They particularly enjoyed debating scenarios linked to Shackleton's Journey, and we were very proud of their beautiful performances in the Carol Concert – they truly earned their Christmas break! Since returning, we’ve begun a new unit of work in maths on multiplication and division, and in the next week they will be learning to multiply three and four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers to help them solve problems. In science, we’ve started exploring the properties of materials, zooming in on changes we can’t see with the naked eye. It’s also been "hurly-burly" in English as we have met Macbeth and his trusty companion, Banquo – not to mention the three witches. We’ve also been working incredibly hard in preparation for performing at the O2 with Young Voices 2026 in just over a week’s time!

In English, they’ve been learning fascinating facts about Antarctica and creating detailed fact files to help them understand the extreme conditions faced by Shackleton’s expedition in Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill. In maths, they’ve been building on their knowledge of square numbers to explore cube numbers as well as practising multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. In geography, they’ve been discovering how the Earth’s tectonic plates move and how this can lead to the formation of volcanoes. Meanwhile, in computing, they’ve loved exploring how videos are made — considering lighting, camera angles and sound to see how these can completely change a viewer’s experience.

They’ve rounded off our unit of work in English on Tuesday by David Weisner with imaginative fictional narratives about flying pigs, which they’ll share with KS1 after half term. They will then embark upon our next exciting text, Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill.

In maths, they’ve been exploring prime and square numbers, while in history they’ve been comparing life in Roman and Anglo-Saxon Britain. We’ve also been very busy rehearsing for our Harvest Assemblies and look forward to performing for you before everyone heads home for the half-term break!

We are absolutely thrilled by how hard the children have worked this half term and how well they have adapted to the expectations of Year 5. A very successful start to the year!

We love the focus and flair that the children have applied to their learning this week! They’ve written some Pulitzer-worthy newspaper reports about the mysterious events of an unforgettable Tuesday night that left a small town in chaos - and are now busy crafting their own imaginative stories to share with younger pupils in KS1. Pigs really might fly!

Our classrooms transformed into mini-lunar labs as the children endeavoured to answer the question, "Why do the Moon’s craters vary so much in size?" In art, they used their collagraph plates to create striking abstract prints, perfect backdrops for the imaginative future scapes to come. In maths, pupils have been flexing their addition and subtraction skills using RUCSAC to help them reason and problem solve, and in music they’re composing atmospheric three-note melodies inspired by Hans Zimmer’s Earth. Meanwhile, our budding historians have been busy asking questions about the artefacts discovered at Sutton Hoo and developing their own hypotheses as to their purpose, ownership and origins.

In science, they’ve been busy exploring Earth’s movement through space, why we experience different seasons, and the different phases of the moon, while in art they’ve put together collagraph plates ready to create imaginative and bold space-themed prints next week. Maths has seen them strengthening place value skills through ordering, comparing, and rounding, and in English they’re sharpening their journalistic writing style using David Wiesner’s Tuesday as their inspiration. History has seen them test their enquiry skills as they uncover how and what we know about Anglo-Saxon life and settlements in England.

We have ended the term with a collaborative DT project using pulleys to transport tomatoes from the table to the floor. The children were inspired by looking at the mountains in Nepal and how farmers have to transport the crops they've grown at the top of the mountain to the markets at the base. We have also been doing narrative writing based on Journey to Jo'burg, which are excellent! We also made front covers for our stories using vector drawing skills learnt in computing. They are all on Google Classroom, so have a look at those over the summer! We wish you all a lovely summer break and look forward to seeing you all around school next year.

Thank you to everyone who came to watch. We are all very proud of their individual achievements, as well as how well they have worked together to perform as a year group. In DT this term, we have been designing and building pulley systems. We have linked this to a real-life problem that farmers in Nepal face, as they have to transport tomatoes they grow down mountains to towns so they are able to sell them at markets. We think you will agree, their designs are fantastic! Next week we will automate them, so we look forward to that. In maths we have entered our final topic of the year - volume. In English, we continue to read Journey to Jo'burg and have started to think about planning a creative narrative where the characters the children design will Journey to a country or city of their choice!

We had a busy and fun-filled week last week and know that the children have gained so much from their experience with their friends. Have a look at the Isle of Wight 2025 folder for more great photos from the trip.

This week, we have crashed back to reality and we are getting Year 6-ready! We have been converting units of measure in maths, researching all about South Africa in English to better understand the background of our new core text, Journey to Jo'burg, as well as investigating mechanical pulley systems in DT. We even had time to visit our chickens this week too!

We have investigated how the groynes at Sandown beach work to stop longshore drift, as well as being able to identify the effects that coastal erosion has had on the island. We will see all of this in action next week! In English, we have rounded up our topic on The Lost Words, where the children have impressed us with their poetic prowess. We have begun to look at our new core text, Journey to Jo'burg by Beverly Naidoo, where we have explored the history of apartheid in South Africa. We have had some excellent discussions in our classes, full of curiosity. In maths we have been learning how to count through zero into negative numbers, applying this to real life situations like temperature. We look forward to seeing you all on Monday morning with a suitcase in tow! Happy packing!

They have immersed themselves in our poetry core text, The Lost Words and written kenning, incantation, diamond incantation and etheree poems. We have enjoyed sharing these aloud in our classes. In science, we have continued our learning on living things and life cycles, researching animals that go through metamorphosis and presenting findings to the class. All of the children were incredibly sensible and mature when learning about the changes their bodies will go through when they reach puberty - they should be commended for their excellent questions and engagement with the talks.

We wrapped up our learning linked to Shakespeare’s Macbeth by choosing a favourite scene from the book to perform using our puppets. Our new core text is The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. We have begun to explore kenning poetry and write some of our own. In geography we have started our topic of coastal features, where we have learnt how to write 6-figure grid references and understand the features of coastlines. You will see in the photos below some lovely examples of our observational house drawings from our new art topic. This week we used viewfinders to choose a section of our sketches to develop into a monoprint. In science we have been able to enjoy our wonderful outside space as we looked for flowers to identify the male and female parts needed for reproduction.

A highlight was our trip to Holy Trinity Church in Richmond, where the children took part in an enriching Easter Experience. It was a thought-provoking session. The children were completely absorbed by the performance of the Easter story and asked some fantastic questions in the forum afterwards.

Back in the classroom, we’ve continued bringing Shakespeare to life in DT, crafting our Macbeth puppets. From fearsome witches to a rather regal-looking King Duncan, the creativity on display has been outstanding. We’ve wrapped up our units of work on shape in maths and global trade in geography, whilst in computing, we've pushed on with our work on databases, where we've been developing our computational thinking by using logical operators to help us answer questions based on the information held in records.

Well done to all the children for participating in the Great Sheen Mount Bounce. There might be some sore legs after some very energetic bouncing! We look forward to the final event of the term on Friday, the unmissable Talent Show. Well done to all the children who participated in the Year 5 auditions. It was a pleasure to see the whole of the year group actively supporting and encouraging each other.

What a weird and wonderful couple of weeks it has been in Year 5. Following all manner of strange sightings on World Book Day, which narrowly missed our last newsletter, we have been busy investigating strange substances in science. Making the most of the sunshine, we worked outside, making and manipulating Oobleck - a non-Newtonian fluid that confounds predictions and defies normal fluidic behaviour. Back inside the classroom, we have been filling the heads of our Macbeth puppets with stuffing and giving them (in some cases quite terrifying) facial features. Further afield, the children have been learning about the Fair Trade organisation in the context of global trade, developing their understanding of the different stages of supply chains and of how consumer choices can have an impact on producers and suppliers half a world away. Closer to home in maths, we have begun a new unit of work on shape and are busy working with angles, whilst in English we are putting the final touches to our newspaper reports based on Macbeth.

In Y5 we truly do seem to seize every moment of every day. Since returning from half-term, we have been busy learning about different types of puppets and their history in preparation for our DT topic this term. This complements our English topic, Macbeth, as the children will be creating their own puppets based on different characters from the play and using them to perform a few scenes - hopefully nothing too gory!

In maths, we completed our first topic of the term on perimeter and area and enjoyed estimating the area of our outstretched hands. We are moving onto a short topic on statistics. In geography, we have been finding out about global trade and investigating where the food in our fridges and cupboards originates from. There were a few surprises, Brazil nuts from Bolivia, for example!

The Djembe drums have been as popular as ever in music and have given our voices a rest after the excitement of Young Voices at the O2. In French, we are exploring the language of the classroom whilst in computing we are learning about databases. Everyone's a gymnast in PE where we have been practising safely carrying out rolls with good technique, before progressing onto some more advanced moves.

Wes hál - or hello - from somewhere in Anglo-Saxon Britain! On Monday, Y5 experienced an epic conclusion to our investigations into the Vikings in Anglo-Saxon Britain. This was a brilliant and enriching experience for the children as they discovered more about Anglo-Saxon and Viking life and tried their hands at various traditional crafts from the era including: candle making, weaving, ink preparation and rune writing, mixing herbal medicines, and more. They then jumped in time to the present day and became archaeologists, searching for and cataloguing artefacts. This was a fun and meaningful experience that enhanced their learning and sparked curiosity outside the classroom. A big thank you to the parents who helped with different activities throughout the day.

Y5 experienced another enrichment experience outside the classroom when they attended an "Eat the Rainbow" workshop as part of mental health week. The children learnt about the importance of a varied and colourful diet and of how this helps them to stay healthy in different ways. In the classroom, we also spent time thinking about ourselves and, inspired by the film Inside Out, created individual personality-islands in order to know ourselves a little better. We also discussed how embracing a positive mindset can help us to grow.

As half-term approaches, we are finishing our unit of work on decimals and percentages in maths and our potion writing in English. The children have also produced some brilliant mixed-media self-portraits in art.

Last week Y5 participated in one of the highlights of our year - the tremendous Young Voices at the O2. Along with 9,000 other primary school children from across the South East, we sang our socks off to a medley of songs that included a Bob Marley tribute, pop classics spanning the ages and music from the musical Hairspray, all accompanied by professional singers and musicians. The children worked really hard in the run-up to the event, and we were hugely impressed by their enthusiasm and proud of their behaviour on the night. Great work children! A huge thank you to the Y5 parents for their support of this endeavour. It is a hugely enriching experience - unlike anything we can reproduce inside the classroom - and even the most reluctant of singers had an absolutely incredible evening.

Of course, classroom learning has also continued over the last couple of weeks! In maths, we completed a short unit of work on fractions that included multiplying both fractions and mixed-numbers by whole numbers. In science, we have been separating mixtures as part of our topic on materials and their properties. Viking trade routes and sagas have been the focus of our enquiries in history and, in English, we have performed part of the witches' opening scene from Macbeth, to help inspire and generate ideas for written setting and character descriptions.

We are so proud of them and of their beautiful singing and are very excited to be performing as part of Young Voices at the O2 next week! These are both fabulous enrichment opportunities that really enhance the children's learning and provide fun and meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.

Before the Christmas break, we concluded units of work on natural disasters in geography, forces in science, Shackleton's Journey in English and, rather tastily, bread-baking in design technology.

The spring term has got off to a flying start! In science, we are developing our understanding of materials, their structure, the states they can exist in and of how they interact with each other. We are getting to grips with Macbeth in English and using primary and secondary sources to help us understand Viking conflict during the latter stages of the Anglo-Saxon period in history. The children have also enjoyed getting creative in our new unit of work incorporating portraiture in art - it transpires that it is somewhat challenging to draw a self-portrait without taking your pencil off the paper!

We have been very busy in Y5 designing, baking and evaluating breads. From baps to plaits, we have had everyone in the school salivating as the smell of freshly baked bread has wafted through corridors, infused with lashings of cheese, onion, rosemary, pesto and jalapeño. It tasted pretty good as well!

We've also been busy in science, learning about hydrodynamics by investigating how the shape of an object influences resistance to its motion as it travels through a liquid. In addition, we've looked at the forces involved in levers and begun to develop an understanding of the concept of mechanical advantage through load/fulcrum/lever models.

In maths, our unit of work on fractions culminates this week, and we look ahead to multiplication and division in the new year. Poetry and motivational speaking have been the order of the day in English through our current text, Shackleton's Journey.

Finally, as the end of term approaches, we have been singing our socks off in preparation for the Christmas Carol Concert, which will surely be a wonderful and fitting conclusion to a fantastic autumn term.

In science, we have been developing our enquiry skills and learning about air resistance - with the help of some parachutes.

Watch out for mouth-watering recipes with some rather interesting ingredients in DT. Pupils have been getting creative and applying what they have learnt about different breads together with their own experiences to imagine their own baked masterpieces that they will produce and taste next week.

Mix all of this in with considering the pros and cons of living next to volcanoes, knead together with some work on fractions and you have just another week in Y5!

In science, after briefly considering volcanoes that exist beyond the realms of Earth - including the extinct mega-shied volcano Olympus Mons on Mars - our attention has shifted from outer space to forces.

We have explored new number concepts including square numbers, cube numbers and prime numbers in our unit of work on multiplication and division, whilst in English we have petitioned Sir Ernest Shackleton to join him as crew members on his 1914 Trans-Antarctica Expedition. If you need a cook, photographer, champion swimmer, navigator, dog handler or able seaman, then you need look no further!

Well done to all of our pupils who have adjusted so well to the Y5 setting - we are tremendously impressed and hope you all have a restful half-term.

In our final investigation as part of our unit of work on space, we investigated how speed of impact affects crater geometry - by making our own craters in the classroom! In maths, we have finished our exploration of addition and subtraction and moved onto multiplication and division - learning for the first time about concepts such as prime and square numbers.

In English, the children created some fascinating fact-files about Antarctica to help immerse us in Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic (Endurance) Expedition of 1914-1916. We have also journeyed even further back in time, comparing life in Roman and Anglo-Saxon Britain.

It was brilliant to see our science topic come to life through immersive projections. We are also enjoying our weekly cricket sessions and have spent some quiet time reading in the library. In English, we have begun writing some creative narratives inspired by our core text 'Tuesday' - are those flying pigs?! In PSHE, we have also been building our team work skills by playing 'the floor is lava', helping each other to cross the playground without touching the floor. This week's theme has been kindness - have you paid an act of kindness forward this week?

The "space" theme has extended to art, where children have produced works using different and contrasting media, inspired by our solar system and beyond.

In English, frogs continue to fall from the sky, enabling the children to put their journalistic skills to the test, reporting on the strange events that befell a sleepy town in David Wiesner's Tuesday.

Everyone has enjoyed the opportunity to play cricket on Fridays - despite the Great British weather's best attempts to delay play!

We kicked off with a tour of our solar system in science and have been checking our astronomical place values in maths - not forgetting that the Romans had their own numerical system - along the way.

In English, we have been levitating in an altogether different manner, exploring the magical world of Tuesday, authored by David Wiesner. Watch out for flying frogs! We have also journeyed back in time to explore the causes and consequences of early Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain and considered retrofuturism in art.

The Year 5 teaching team have been delighted with how quickly the children have settled into Y5 life in their new classes and look forward to the exciting year ahead.

This creativity has extended to designing book covers using vector graphics in computing, which will adorn their completed stories in booklet format. We can't wait to see the final results!

In maths, we are completing short units of work on converting units of measure and also volume and capacity before the end of term, whilst in History we have considered disruptions to schooling due to events such as WWII and the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the academic year draws to a close, we have enjoyed welcoming Y4 into our classes to share and celebrate this year's learning and to give them a taste of what is to come. We have also all enjoyed watching Y6 perform the dress rehearsal of their fabulous end-of-year production. Y5 made sure to take notes for next year's performance - when it will be their turn!

Monday saw pupils meet their new Y6 teachers and experience their classrooms for next year. It's fair to say there is a great deal of excitement and perhaps a little trepidation about moving up to the top of the school!

Sun, sea and sand were the perfect backdrop for our visit to the Isle of Wight. Active learning opportunities were abundant - from fossil hunting at Compton beach to coastal features and erosion in action at the Needles and Alum Bay. The many months spent in captivity by Charles I were evident at Carisbrooke Castle and everyone was fascinated by the history of the HMS Victory and Mary Rose. Perhaps most of all, it was wonderful to see the children develop their independence and resilience: organising and preparing themselves for each day's activities, braving themselves to take on new challenges, supporting their peers, and celebrating mutual successes. Whether it was riding on a chairlift for the first time, conquering the 4m jump at Tapnell water-park, travelling upside down on the terrifying/exhilarating Extinction ride at Blackgang Chine or enduring being away from home, every child embraced something new and achieved something to be proud of.

Now that we've returned to school, the learning hasn't stopped! We've started a new topic in History - a post 1066 thematic study about schools and school life. In DT we've been investigating pulleys and mechanical systems. Decimals continue to be our focus in maths, and we are writing letters in English as part of our unit of work relating to the book Journey to Jo'burg. Careers week activities have also kept us engaged and very busy this week. A huge thank you to all of our parents who have supported this.

There has been a decidedly Isle of Wight flavour to lessons this week! In maths, we have continued our work on decimals, which will prove very handy when considering how best to spend pocket money on the trip. We've also been busy orienteering, which will be useful in making sure that we get to all the right places at all the right times. In art, we've been finishing our landscape watercolours and finding out about the work of Turner, Cezanne and O'Keefe - which will help us to better appreciate the scenery from an artist's perspective, and finally, we've been making sure that everyone is up to speed with what to bring. Fingers crossed for some sunshine!

In art, the children have been thinking about perspective and sketching views of Christ Church from the Orchard, in preparation for producing watercolours next week. This has been accompanied by outdoor exertion in PE, where “indoor” PE has become outdoor PE as pupils engage in orienteering activities around the school.

In English, we continue to develop our non-chronological report writing skills using the text Journey to Jo’burg, by Beverley Naidoo, to understand what life under apartheid was like. We have also investigated metamorphosis and incomplete metamorphosis, using secondary sources, in insects and reptiles ranging from salamanders to dung beetles!

Each performance demonstrated great creativity and panache - well done Y5!

Trees have been the order of the day in art, with children experimenting with different brush-strokes to create everything from statuesque pines to weeping willows. The outdoors theme has extended to our work in English, where we continue to enjoy poems within The Lost Words. Children have explored figurative language, in particular using metaphors within kennings and both metaphors and personification within etherees.

Following on from our work on shape in maths, we are now focussing on position and direction. This complements our work in geography where we have been busy looking at maps and grid references, as well as finding out more about the fascinating processes that govern the formation of different coastal features.

There were disquieting witches, ill-fated Banquos, deranged Lady Macbeths and some magnificent - if malevolent - Macbeths. This week the children have enjoyed the fruits-of-their-labours and performed scenes from the play with their puppets, concluding this unit of work. We now move onto poetry and are looking at the fabulous book Lost Words, by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris.

We've been cartwheeling in PE and identifying different types of angles in maths - as well as learning how to measure, estimate and calculate them. Grid references have been the order of the day in geography and in science, we have dissected flowers in order to better understand their different parts and functions. A cracking start to the summer term!

In science, as part of our unit of work on properties and changes of materials, we learnt about non-Newtonian fluids and investigated Oobleck, a mixture of corn flour and water that has some very interesting properties. Our classrooms have also been full of old socks, wool and scraps of material as we have started to create our puppets in DT. We're looking forward to seeing the finished articles!

We've been journalists in English - covering the brutal murder of Banquo in Macbeth, statisticians in maths - interpreting line graphs, and have learnt to safely perform forward and backward rolls in PE. To top it all off, the children's Djembe drumming sounds superb!

We went retro - finding out all about the space race, the world's first electronic mouse, what school children in the sixties thought their futures would hold and whether they were right or not; all washed down with lashings of Pop Art and accompanied by the Beatles. What a fabulous and 'far-out' day!

Back in the 2020s, we have been busy compiling soliloquies fashioned on Macbeth's ruinous ruminations as well as designing puppets based on characters from the very same play. Watch out for some spine-chillingly sinister witches and menacing Macbeths.

Global trade has been on the agenda in geography. We've been impressed by pupils' insights into where the food they eat is produced and how it reaches us, alongside their developing understanding of the implications of this at a local, national and international level.

Later this term they will design, make and evaluate puppets linked to our core text: Macbeth. The only question is - will they have the same dire consequences as in Macbeth…?

Pupils then teamed up to build three of their designs before testing them on the astro-turf. Finally, they evaluated how the different combinations of tail configuration (empennage) and wing shape had performed. An action-packed and inspiring day.

In English, we have continued our work on Macbeth, bringing to life the three witches and their ominous prophecies, whilst in maths we have finished our topic on multiplication and division and moved on to working with fractions.
A huge thank you to all of the staff, parents and of course, children, who contributed to this very special event.

And - not to diminish the rest of the week - Y5 have also been busy creating wonderful land art based on the work of Andy Goldsworthy, exploring the battlefield with Macbeth and extending their understanding and skills of both multiplication and division.

In English, pupils have been putting the final touches to some very motivational, and at times - emotional, speeches; inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton's experiences in Antarctica. Meanwhile, in maths we have been getting our heads around adding and subtracting fractions.

Y5 kicked off the week with a fabulous Anglo Saxon workshop delivered by the brilliant Saxon Sue. The children enjoyed a hands-on experience of what life would have been like during this period and developed some useful skills as well. Candle making, weaving, ink making and amulet design were just a selection of the activities they engaged in before becoming archaeologists on the hunt for Anglo Saxon artefacts. In Science, pupils carried out an investigation to determine why the moon has so many different sizes of crater, by making their own craters in the classroom!

We have had a visit from the Science Dome where we learnt all about our solar system, why we have seasons and how much space there really is in space. We had a visit from a brilliant local artist, who showed us how to make contrast prints. These will be turned into some fantastic artwork for our school so watch this space! In English, we have been writing in the style of journalists this week - below you can see photos of some of the role play interviews.
