Stone Age Day!

Our Year 3 children had an unforgettable time on Stone Age Day. They tried their hand at flint knapping and made some very impressive spearheads. We created striking cave paintings, and learned fascinating facts from our Stone Age visitor. It was a wonderfully immersive experience that brought history to life!

Year 3 have travelled back in time to begin learning about the Stone Age. Their learning has been enhanced by some wonderful art lessons including a focus on Stone Henge at sunrise and a study of animals using charcoal. In other news, they have begun reading 'Major Glad, Major Dizzy'. Ask them what has been found under the floorboards.

Year 3 Takeover

The whole school became year 3's playground on Friday evening as we gathered for the evening. It was an exclusive event; only year 3 children or teaching team were allowed in! Lots of fun was had as we used the whole of the school grounds for orienteering, playing games and picnicking with the sandwiches we had made earlier in the day. It was a fabulous evening to celebrate the wonderful year we have had together. You're ready for year 4 now children!

Kew Gardens

We had a fabulous day out at Kew Gardens last week. The photo shows us learning about how plants in the rainforest are adapted to their habitat. We used geographical equipment to measure air temperature, humidity, light and soil temperature. Whilst we walked around the gardens we spotted the different buildings we have been learning about in our lessons on the history of this special place. Lots of sunshine, lots of steps, lots of smiles!

Life skills!

Year 3 have been learning some important life skills this week. In our safe walking training, we have learnt how to find a safe place to cross the road as well as following the Stop, Think, Look, Listen message. In the classroom, we have been working on learning to tell the time on both analogue and digital clocks. This work has included understanding the difference between am and pm and also reading a clock with Roman numerals.

Year 3 have had an exciting start to our final half-term together. In maths, we have been working with pounds and pence, adding and subtracting amounts of money. In English, we are planning our own individual fantasy adventure story inspired by Podkin One Ear. Each child has chosen an animal for their main character and has researched this animal so they are familiar with its appearance, habitat and diet. They have also designed their own map of the fantasy land where their story will take place. Ask your child what their character and book is called.

Rainforest Creativity

We have loved looking at the children's rainforest dioramas this week. Wonderful creative homework from everyone! We hope that the whole family enjoyed this extended homework and learnt a little about the layers of the rainforest and the creatures that live there. In geography last week, we learnt about the indigenous people living in the Amazon rainforest and this week we will learn about deforestation and it's impact on the environment. We will study both sides of the argument and develop some debating skills.

Year 3 are making the most of the fabulous weather and our marvellous grounds by taking lessons outside. We have been pouring and measuring water in our maths lessons to ensure that we have a good understanding of capacity and volume. As you can imagine, this messy activity was best carried out outside. In science we have begun a new topic on plants so we have explored the grounds looking for variation between different stems, leaves and flowers.

River fun

Year 3 have had a fabulous half-term of learning which has included studying the River Nile. We are finishing the topic with a field trip to the River Thames at Mortlake. No pyramids or crocodiles but a chance for the children to use some of their new vocabulary and observe life on the UK's second longest river. Back at school, the children have produced some stunning abstract art work inspired by the work of Georgia O'Keefe.

PE in the sun

We are enjoying the welcome sunshine and warmth at playtimes and in our PE sessions. In the classroom, we have been writing poetry and this week we have focused on metaphors. Here are some examples the children have written: "Rainbows are a river of colour in the sky,", "Grass is the earth's carpet," Stars are bonfires in the dark, dark sky,". Year 3 will be sharing some of their learning, including some of their poems, next Thursday (27th March) at our year group assembly; 9.10am in the hall.

Excellent Egyptians

Year three have celebrated coming to the end of their history topic of Ancient Egypt by making Canopic jars. These were used for storing the internal organs in the mummification process. Ask your child which jar they made and what organ would have been stored in them. Despite finishing the history topic, we will continue to study Egypt next term when we look at the River Nile in our geography lessons. We will also continue to perfect our dance inspired by Ancient Egypt ready for our year 3 assembly; make sure that 27th March in in your diaries!

Year 3 were transported 3000 years back in time this week to Ancient Egypt. They were put to work by the vizier and given many different tasks to help prepare for the Pharaoh's tomb. Amulets, Canopic jars, perfumes, cartouches and carved scarab beetles were amongst the crafts that the children could make. The children looked amazing in their costumes as they worked. Later in the day, there was a feast with performances and dances to celebrate the appointment of the new high priest. An awesome day of learning and fun!

Marvellous Medicine and Music

Year 3 have had a busy start to the new year. We have started our new core text, George's Marvellous Medicine, and are using this to inspire us to design our own powerful potions. Ask your child what theirs is called and what persuasive writing they have put on their label. The children are very excited to have started learning about Ancient Egypt especially as we are using the topic to inspire other lessons such as dance, art and music. Year 3 children enjoyed examining lots of amazing fossils this week - thanks to Brett Graham for sharing his collection. They took a trip back in time as they learnt about how fossils are formed. In English the children have been pretending to be newspaper reporters writing about the fabulous firework competition which is the finale of our class book. We are really looking forward to our carol concert next week and hope to see year 3 parents in the church at 2pm on Wednesday. Merry Christmas from the team.

Richmonds Around the World

In geography we have been looking at four different locations in the world which are all called Richmond: London, Yorkshire, Virginia USA and Melbourne Australia. Every day we have been recording the temperature in these locations and using a key we have stuck a different coloured leaf to our display to represent this temperature. The photo shows 3T's display this week. As part of the topic, the children have learnt about different climate zones, the northern and southern hemispheres and can describe locations as either rural or urban.

Year 3 have started reading The Firework Maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman. We are using this text to inspire our writing this term. Last week we wrote instructions for making our own firework using magical ingredients just like Lila and her father do. This week we are considering how Lila feels when her father tells her that she cannot be a firework maker even though she feels that she knows everything she needs to know in order to be an excellent firework maker. The picture shows our own 'Lila' walking through 'conscience alley' as we try to understand her dilemma. We will all be writing letters of advice to her.

You've Got Jelly on Your Hat!

Year 3 have celebrated the end of a long half term by making and eating jelly. The heroes of our core text, Major Glad Major Dizzy, love jelly so it is an appropriate way to finish; our last piece of writing based on the book will be instructions on how to make jelly. The children have also been having science related fun by making shadow puppet theatres and putting on plays about the adventures of the two heroic soldiers. To do this successfully, they have needed to understand how shadows are formed and to choose materials which are translucent and materials which are opaque.

To celebrate black history month, we have looked at a timeline stretching back to pre-historic times which shows how key people of colour have been in British history for tens of thousands of years. We have also learnt a little about the amazing author Malarie Blackman. Have a lovely half term break!

Stone Age Day

Year 3 have gone back in time for the day to learn more about life in the Stone Age era. They have created tools using flint knapping, hunted for animals and pretended to use every part of their catch for either eating, making shelter and clothing or jewellery. They have created cave paintings in their cave. There has also been a fabulous visit from a theatre company where the children met an interacted with an archaeologist and a palaeolithic human. Altogether an amazing day of hands on learning!

Sunshine and shadows

Year 3 took advantage of the sunshine last week and carried out a scientific investigation. At 3 points during the day we drew around a child's shadow. We used the same child each time to ensure that our investigation was a fair test. As you can see in the photo, the shadow was in a different place at each time. The children were able to explain that the shadow had changed because the sun (the light source) was in different position in the sky. We then could discuss how the earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours.

Stonehenge

Year 3 have made a great start to the new year and are getting used to the new routines. They have already shown fabulous maths skills and are preparing themselves for their first piece of writing in their new English books. They have begun to learn about prehistory in our topic for the half term; The Stone Age to the Iron Age. As you can see, they have produced some art work reflecting their learning. In addition to all the learning, they have made new friends in their mixed up classes. Well done!

We have had a wonderful year teaching the lovely year 3 children. They have worked hard, laughed and learnt so much. We wish them well as they continue their Sheen Mount journey into year 4. The last couple of weeks of year 3 have continued to be packed with learning with lots of maths work on shape and statistics and the completion of their epic fantasy adventure stories. The photo is of the 'Takeover' which took place a few weeks ago and the children tell us was one of the highlights of the year.

Year 3 have been busy with 2 design and technology projects this week. Firstly, they have evaluated existing sandwich packaging before designing and making their own shell structures to safely hold a tasty lunch. They have also been evaluating different ingredients and have planned their own nutritious sandwich. They will make the sandwiches on Thursday morning, place them in their packaging and finally get to eat them on an afternoon picnic.

Kew Gardens

Year 3 had a super exciting day out at Kew Gardens on Tuesday. This trip supported their geography (rainforest), science (plants), history (local area) and art (botanical drawings) learning so many areas of the curriculum were supported whilst we also had some fun in the sunshine. A highlight of the day was seeing the Titan Arum plant in flower. This was a real privilege as this plant from the rainforests of Sumatra only comes into flower once every 3 - 7 years. Luckily for us it opened on the night before our visit. This meant that its pungent 'corpse' smell had cleared before we saw it.

Budding Artists and Blooming Art

Year 3 have learnt several new art skills this term whilst studying plants. They have improved their sketching and shading skills, created closely observed botanical drawings and made rubbings of different textured objects to produce a frottage piece of work. Their final work in the unit was based on the wonderful abstract work of Georgia O' Keefe. Each child used a viewfinder to focus in on a part of a flower which they then used as their inspiration for the above beautiful paintings.

Year 3 children are enjoying learning new tennis skills every Thursday afternoon at the courts on Sheen Common. We are very lucky to have Ben from Community Parks Tennis giving us these free tennis lessons in this wonderful venue. The children have been learning underarm and over arm service and have even begun to learn how to score a tennis game. In other news, we have loved seeing your rainforest dioramas; thank you for all the parent involvement in this homework.

Ancient Egypt Day

Last week's Ancient Egypt day was a great success as the children enjoyed a morning filled with marketplace activities dressed in their fabulous costumes. The afternoon was spent celebrating the new high priest with the Pharoah and Queen Nefertitti in attendance. There was entertainment provided by each class in the form of dance and storytelling and food was served by the slaves. Thanks to all the parents who helped on the day - hopefully you learnt some new skills too!

Fractions

Over the past two weeks, the year 3 children have been working with fractions. In the photo, you can see them building a fraction wall as they begin to understand equivalent fractions. In English we have been focusing on imagery in poetry and the children have written some wonderful metaphors. In science we have been using magnets and in geography, we have been learning about the River Nile.

We are all looking forward to performing in our assembly next Tuesday morning. We hope to see the year 3 parents there at approximately 9am.

Editing our work

While we have been writing limericks, we have been learning how to edit our work. This is an important but difficult skill to master. We set up editing stations around the classroom where the children can check their writing for errors and find opportunities for improvement. To learn the skill, we have begun with the children editing adult work which has deliberate errors. In science, we have been investigating magnets this week and we can now explain that magnets have a north and south pole and that the opposite poles attract.

Measuring

Year 3 children have been busy measuring the length of objects around the classroom in maths lessons. They have learnt how to convert from millimetres to centimetres and from centimetres to metres and have also been adding and subtracting measurements of length. The photo shows children measuring how far they can jump. This knowledge will be useful in next week's science lesson when they will investigate how far a toy car can travel on different surfaces as part of our understanding of friction as a force. Before the week is over, they will also have learnt how to find the perimeter of a quadrilateral. Lots of wonderful maths learning!

Year 3 have been inspired by George's Marvellous medicine to design their own bottle of medicine to cure grumpy, grouchy grandparents. They have used their new skills in persuasive writing to create a label for their potion. Next week they will write an advert to accompany this bottle. Watch out complaining grandmas, these mixtures contain some revolting ingredients! The children have returned to school in 2024 full of energy and have been enjoying their new topic in history: Ancient Egypt.

Christmas is nearly here so year 3 have been busy designing and making Christmas decorations for their D and T project. Once they have finished evaluating their end product to check that it meets all their design criteria, the beautiful decoration will be coming home to adorn your Christmas tree. It is designed to be reusable so you can look forward to many years admiring your child's sewing skills.

We're still working hard in our maths and English lessons as well as practising our songs for our concert next Wednesday. See you all at 2pm in the church.

Year 3 have been busy this week learning how to write newspaper articles. We have been looking at lots of examples of newspapers to decide what the key features of this genre of writing are. We have also begun to write our own articles together based on the adventures of Lila, Chulak and Hamlet in The Firework Maker's Daughter. To relax from all this hard work, we have been painting pointillism pictures this afternoon.

Our science topic this half-term is rocks and soils. The children have learnt the 3 types of rock; sedimentary, igneus and metamorphic. Ask them how each type of rock is formed. This week, they have been investigating the properties of some different types of rocks. In our English lessons, the children have been describing the scene at the Full Moon Festival in our class book; The Firework Maker's Daughter. It is a magical occasion with colourful lanterns hanging from the trees, the shimmering skirts of dancers swaying in the moonlight and fragrant candles floating across the emerald lake. There have been some beautiful descriptions.

Shadow Shows

To finish off our science topic of light and shadow, year 3 made elaborate shadow puppet theatres. We turned off the lights and used a torch to illuminate our shadow puppets as we performed to our class. The opaque puppets could be seen through the translucent baking paper at the front of our theatres. It was lots of fun!

Stone Age Day

The children have had a wonderful day of immersion in Stone Age life. They have created cave paintings in our classroom 'cave', sat around a fire flint knapping whilst telling stories of a successful day's hunting and have also been entertained by a visitor from the Stone Age. Using the magic of theatre, our visitor changed into an archaeologist who taught us how artefacts are found and used to tell us more about the past.

Major Glad, Major Dizzy

This is the title of our class text which is inspiring our writing this half-term. It tells the story of objects found under the floorboards in a Victorian house; two of these objects being wooden toy soldiers. The children have been writing in role as these toy soldiers; Major Glad and Major Dizzy. This week our heroes have become bored of being under the floorboards (they have already been there for 20 years) so have written letters to the grown-up children of the household asking to be rescued. We have been super impressed with the year 3 children's letter writing skills.

Sunshine and shadows

We have made a great start to the year by making the most of the sunny weather to learn how shadows are formed. We learnt that shadows are formed when a light source such as the sun is blocked by an opaque object like our bodies. We drew round our shadows in the playground at 3 different times during the day and observed that the size and direct of the shadows changed. The year 3 teachers have been very impressed by the attitude of the children as they have made the big leap to KS2 and are looking forward to a great year of learning.

Sandwich Time

Year 3 have been focusing on 2 design and technology projects this week; the first is to plan and make a healthy sandwich and the second is to design and make a shell structure to keep their sandwich protected. Today, the sandwiches were made by the children and placed in their fabulous boxes. We eventually allowed them to feast on their creations although unfortunately the rain did not allow us to have our planned picnic. Please ask your child what they liked about their sandwich and box and what they would do to improve it.

Budding Authors

This week, all the year 3 children have been busy writing their own fantasy adventures. We have used Podkin One Ear as our inspiration but have created our own characters, settings and plots. The children are currently writing up their fabulous stories and illustrating them so that we can create class books. They have loved this activity so please ask them about their own creations; they may well want to write a sequel at home. In other areas of the curriculum, they have learnt river vocabulary, carried our scientific observations, learnt more about safe use of the Internet, measured mass and capacity, had conversations in French and danced to Dancing Queen. Phew!!
