It has been a very busy and exciting few weeks in Year 2!

In Literacy, the children have been working hard to research and write their own fact books about lighthouses. They have enjoyed learning interesting facts and organising their writing into clear sections using headings and subheadings.

In maths, we have now completed our unit on multiplication and division. The children have been developing their understanding of grouping and sharing, and have shown great progress in using different strategies to solve problems confidently.

Our science topic on animals has been a real highlight. The children have also carefully observed and recorded the life cycle of a butterfly, completing butterfly diaries filled with detailed observational sketches. It has been wonderful to see their growing curiosity and attention to detail.

In Design and Technology, we have finished our unit on Wheels and Axles, where the children designed and built their own vehicles. They demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills while adding axles and wheels to make their models move. We have also completed a food technology unit, where the children made healthy yoghurt dips. They thoroughly enjoyed planning, preparing, tasting and evaluating their dips- there were some very interesting food combinations!

In Art, the children have been developing their observational drawing skills. They have focused on tone and texture, carefully drawing objects and improving their ability to add detail and shading.

We were also incredibly proud of the children during our Spring Singing Assembly, where they performed beautifully and showed great enthusiasm.

As we come to the end of term, we would like to thank you for your continued support. We wish you all a very happy and restful Easter holiday!

This week in English we have been exploring the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage. The children enjoyed learning about the characters and the events in the story. We have also been learning about compound words and how two words can join together to make a new word. In addition, the children have been practising their instruction writing by writing clear steps for how to make a sandwich.

In Maths we have been solving worded problems involving multiplication and division. The children have been working hard to read the questions carefully and decide which operation they need to use to find the correct answer.

In Science our caterpillars are growing, and the class has been very excited to observe the changes each day. We are watching them closely and the children are keeping a science diary to record what they see as the caterpillars grow and develop.

In Art we have been learning about texture and tone. The children have been experimenting with different techniques to create texture and practising how to use light and dark shading in their artwork.

In RE we have been learning about prophets, including the story of Jonah and the Whale and learning about Prophet Muhammad. The children have been thinking about the messages these important figures shared.

We are also working very hard practising our songs for the Spring Assembly, and the children are doing a fantastic job learning the words and actions.

Thank you for your continued support, have a lovely weekend!

What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Year 2! The children have worked incredibly hard and shown great enthusiasm across the curriculum. Here’s what we’ve been learning:
We continued reading Mary Poppins, focusing on the chapter 'Laughing Gas'. The children wrote diary entries from the characters’ points of view and created comic strips to retell the events. We focused on using the past tense, including simple and progressive forms, to improve our writing.
In maths, we have been adding money together. The children visited our imaginary Pudding Lane Bakery, where they practised using coins and learnt that 100p is equal to £1. This practical activity helped them develop confidence when working with money.
In PE, we continued our dance lessons continued this week as we moved to a count of 8. The children explored how to use their bodies to show different emotions, thinking carefully about how movement can change to reflect feelings.
In Geography, we learnt how to draw maps of our local area, before moving on to maps of London. The children included key London landmarks and used directional language to describe where places are located. We also used a key to help other people read our maps.
In science, we explored what humans and animals need to survive, including food, water, air, and shelter. The children made thoughtful links between the needs of different living things.

We can’t wait to share our Design and Technology (DT) learning with you next time!

Thank you for your continued support,

What a wonderful few weeks we have had in year 2!

This week in English, we have continued to explore our Mary Poppins learning in more depth. The children have been developing their understanding of the past progressive tense and used it to write their own imaginative sentences. We also had lots of fun creating our own chalk drawings inspired by Mary Poppins before jumping into our pictures and going on magical adventures. The children showed great creativity and enthusiasm throughout the week.

In Maths, we have been rounding off our learning about shapes and exploring £D shapes. The children have been identifying, naming and discussing the properties of different 3D shapes, such as faces, edges, and vertices.

In Computing, we have been learning about instructions and algorithms. The children used Bee-Bots to practise giving clear, step-by-step instructions and enjoyed programming them to move around the classroom.

In Geography, we have been learning about famous London landmarks and sorting them into human and physical features.

In PSHE, we have been discussing surprises and secrets. The children talked about what makes a surprise fun and happy and the difference between a safe secret and a secret that should be shared with a trusting adult.

We are very proud of how hard the children have worked this week and the enthusiasm they have brought to their learning. Thank you for your continued support and engagement. We wish you a wonderful weekend!

Happy New Year and welcome back to a very frosty spring term! The children have settled in well after a long break and are now happily back into a normal routine.

This week, in our English lessons, we have started our new book, Mary Poppins! We have read the first chapter and familiarised ourselves with the main characters using our inference skills. We have also watched and listened to Michael and Janes’ requirements for the perfect Nanny. I think the wind is about to change and she may be on her way…

In our maths lessons, we have started a new unit on shape. We began by recapping 2D and 3D shapes from year 1 and are now identifying their properties using mathematical vocabulary e.g. sides, vertex, vertices, polygons.

In our PSHE lessons we will be focusing on ‘Safety and the Changing body’. In computing, we are learning about robot algorithms and had a lot of fun pretending to be robots to practise giving instructions. In PE, we have started new unit on dance and worked in groups to use our bodies and facial expressions to portray our feelings.

A lot of new learning for a new year! Have a lovely and relaxing weekend.

A huge congratulations to all of year 2 for the amazing Christmas Show! They have practised hard and achieved three incredible performances, all very different with special highlights for us all to enjoy. They performed with projected voices, they sang in harmony and with actions and they covered for each other when friends were sick. It was wonderful to see and felt like a huge team effort amongst the 90 children. Aside from this, lessons have continued as usual. We have started a new book in literacy called 'How to catch a star' and learnt how to write questions using punctuation and a range of question words. In art we have sculpted clay pumpkins and are about to paint them. In maths, we are learning to subtract using 2-digit numbers and our knowledge of number bonds and mental maths. In geography, we have learnt about the hot and cold regions of the world. Another highlight of our week was learning about Hanukkah and playing traditional games with Phlox's Mum! We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and to wish you all a very merry Christmas!

Year 2 have been incredible at learning their lines for our Christmas Play! We are so proud of them. They have been practising acting out their parts, using stage props and projecting their voices. It will be really exciting to see them perform in the dress rehearsal next week. On top of this, learning has continued in all subject areas. They have sculpted pumpkins out of playdough, perfecting their pumpkin shapes and honing their sculpting skills. Here are some examples to share, and the final clay sculpture will be coming home in time for Christmas. They have revisited subtraction and practised using their number bonds to take away. We have finished our literacy book "Lost and Found" and written the story using all the grammar we have learnt about – verbs, adverbs, adjectives and subjects! They learnt about the Polar Regions of the world in geography, and we looked at advent, in particular the advent candles and how they are lit in the lead up to Christmas.

What a fantastic start to the new half-term!

In Geography, we have been learning all about our place in the world. This week, we revisited our Year 1 learning about the continents and oceans, using atlases to help us label and locate them accurately.

In English, we began our new story, Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children have loved retelling the story through acting and sequencing, and have been learning about expanded noun phrases. They then put their skills into practice by creating wonderful missing posters for the penguin!

In Maths, we have continued our work on addition and subtraction, focusing on adding to the next ten and using this strategy to help us add one-digit numbers to two-digit numbers.

In Art, we have been sketching pumpkins, looking carefully at the lines and textures we use. This is great preparation for our upcoming clay sculptures at the end of the unit.

We are also busy rehearsing for our Christmas production — learning lines, acting, and singing with lots of energy and enthusiasm!

We have been so impressed with how Year 2 have come back after half-term with such a positive, can-do attitude. Their enthusiasm and determination have really shone through, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing progress they make this term!

What a busy half term it has been in Year 2! Over the last couple of weeks, we have been finishing our art unit on collage by adding detail and evaluating (Please see some of our masterpieces in the above picture!).

In English, we have been looking at the Oliver Jeffers story, ‘STUCK’ which is all about a little boy who gets his kite stuck in a tree and ends up throwing up all sorts of items in the tree to knock the first one down, with each item getting more and more unbelievable! This week we had a lot of fun writing our own version of the story with a Halloween theme and have been working really hard to make our sentences more exciting by including a variety of sentence starters, adjectives and verbs.

In maths, we have started a new unit on addition and subtraction by recapping our number bonds to ten, writing ‘fact families’ and thinking about related facts.

In science, we have continued our topic on materials by investigating which materials are absorbent and thinking about the suitability of materials and their purpose.

Finally, we have also been doing A LOT of singing in preparation for our Harvest Assemblies this week. The children have worked really hard to learn the lines to the songs and poems and are really looking forward to performing them to you!

We hope you have a wonderful and restful half term break. The Year 2 team.

We have begun lots of new exciting topics. In English, we are looking at Anthony Browne books and have begin with the book called 'zoo'. The children have amazed us with thoughtful descriptions of the dad in the story. In maths, we have been learning about fractions and have just learnt about a third. In history we have begun our topic of the Victorians and have been looking at artefacts - household objects and toys - used in Victorian days. Can you guess what they are in the photograph? In religious education we are learning about prophets and their stories in the different religions. Finally in design and technology we are making a healthy dip and have been preparing what ingredients we will need.

Well done Year 2. In English, we have been continuing our story of Mary Poppins and having great fun recreating a scene where we laugh so much that we start to float on the ceiling. In maths, we have been looking at measuring in cm and m. We have also been looking at reasoning to explain our answers. In science, we have set up our own plant experiments and understand why plants need light, warmth and water to grow and what will happen if the plants don’t have these 3 things. And finally, in history we have stepped back in time and looked at what schools were like in the past. We are all very excited to share our homework where we asked a member of our family what school was like for them.

This has been part of our work on our next text 'Mary Poppins'. It bought together all our grammatical learning and included the use of adjectives, conjunctions, sentence punctuation and contractions. We have also been making chalk pictures outside to bring to life the scene with Bert, the match man. We began a new art module on drawing. The first lesson was exploring using charcoal to make marks. We had a lot of fun and learnt that charcoal is burnt wood and very black! In maths, we have been finishing our learning on multiplication and division, and we have been our new topics in Science and History, focusing on Plants and Schools through the ages.

We have learnt key vocabulary such as; symmetry, vertices, sides, horizontal, vertical, faces, and edges. We have spent time focusing on horizontal and vertical lines of symmetry. In science, we designed and created a waterproof boat that could hold five passengers (marbles). We were able to use a range of materials and in our groups we had to decide on which material would be best suited. We then tested our boats! In music, we have learnt how to keep the beat. We have used the word crotchet. We have learnt this through the Grandma Rap!
