Absorb this knowledge!

In science this week, Year 5 have been learning about absorbency.  We enjoyed working in groups to test different types of paper towel using fair test conditions to identify which one had the greatest absorbency.  We learnt that paper is made of fibres called cellulose, which water molecules like to cling to. As a result, paper readily absorbs water. Paper towels are especially absorbent because their fibres have empty spaces which are made up of tiny air bubbles.  Water molecules, which like to stay together, follow one another as they are absorbed by the cellulose and then fill the empty spaces.
