Sheltering underground

The last couple of weeks have been very busy for Year 6. To bring our learning about World War II to life, we visited the underground air raid shelter at St Leonard’s Court to help us imagine what it would have been like for people sheltering from the bombing during the Blitz.

The children were intrigued by the sleeping rooms with their 3-tier bunk beds and all agreed that sheltering in a concrete bunker, full of the smells of tobacco smoke and chemical toilets, would not have been much fun!

In English, we have been using our core text ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’, along with our learning in history, to write a letter in character about being evacuated from London to Devon.  We are also impressing the Year 6 teachers with our willingness to ‘give it a go’ in our French lessons. Our nasal phonic sounds are coming along particularly nicely!
