Pirates and spiders!

Another busy week in Year 1! Last week we started a new English topic all about Pirates! We now consider ourselves ‘pirate experts’ as we have learnt many facts, used these facts to write a fact page for our Golden book writing as well as making fact cards which we will use to quiz the current Year 2 to see what they have remembered from last year!

In maths, we started our unit on place value with a focus on 50-100. So far, we have practised counting forwards and backwards from any given number, looked at 1 more and 1 less (and 10 more and 10 less!) by using a 100s square to identify any patterns. We have also recapped tens and ones and made 2- digit numbers using Base Ten. We then moved on to comparing numbers with the same amount of tens e.g. 64 is less than 66.

In art, we finished our unit on paper sculpture by making a collaborative piece of art- a giant spider!

In science, we completed our unit on plants by recapping our learning (from the beginning of Summer 1!) and then using this knowledge to plant Cress Caterpillars.

Finally, last Friday we learnt about The Battle of Stamford Bridge and the defeat of Harald Hardrada. Currently, Harold Godwinson is still the King of England and we are looking forward to finding out what happens next…(no spoilers please!)

Have a wonderful weekend! The Year 1 team.
