Year 6

Welcome to the Spring Term 2010!

Highlights of the Autumn Term

WWII

Last term we had a fantastic time learning about WWII.  We particularly enjoyed our "Make Do and Mend" sessions with Mrs Hocking, designing, building, testing and evaluating our model air raid shelters and learning about the war through first hand accounts.  Our teachers were especially proud of our writing and performance of the Remembrance Assembly.

"It was really interesting when Mrs Hocking invited her parents in to talk about WWII." (Sian, 6K)

"During the last week of term we enjoyed a spectacular experiment involving glue guns, wood and saws - the challenge was to build a model air raid shelter.   Only a few survived the dropping of a 1kg weight; the leading structure was the pyramid." (Laith and William Appleby, 6S).

We were delighted that Morris Gleitzman found time to come and talk with us about the creative writing process.  He also told us a little bit about his new book called "Now" which follows on from two of his previous novels.

Sport

We are very proud of all our Year 6 athletes who have represented Sheen Mount in cross-country running, football, netball and rugby. "The Year 6 football team has done very well by winning all our games so far and most of the matches have been won by a big margin. We won our first game by a long way, beating Meadlands 8-2. Next we played Russell school beating them 3-2; that was probably our toughest game so far.  Our next match was an 8-0 win over St. Elizabeth’s." (Bradley 6K).

Fundraising

Our four Year 6 school councillors did a great job organising Pyjama Friday in aid of Children in Need. "Everyone brought in a donation in order to wear pyjamas.  We raised over £450.  It was so much fun!"  (Lily and Cecile, 6S).

Spring Term

It's All Greek To Me!

We are now busy learning about the Ancient Greeks, our Year 6 topic for the Spring Term. We have started by looking at the Greek gods.  "This is like no other history topic we have faced before as we can never be sure of the facts."  (George, 6S).

We have already produced some fantastic writing about the gods.  For example: "One day I heard a rumour that Aphrodite had fallen in love with Hephaestus because he keeps on making her attractive objects.  This is an outrage.  I have to admit, although it hurts, he's an excellent blacksmith." (George, 6K).

Numeracy

In numeracy, we are all still really enjoying 'Free Thinking Fridays', where we get to use our maths knowledge and understanding to solve some really difficult puzzles and problems. We are also improving our speed and accuracy when answering quickfire questions.

Science and the Arts

We are really looking forward to Arts Week, a poetry recital competition and a trip to see a science show!  Life is so busy in Year 6.
